Baxter’s Exodus and Metamorphasis

Meanwhile

Chapter One

A hand grabbed his foot and shook it bringing Baxter out of his sleep terrified. He attempted to jump out of bed but his shoulder was being held in a steel grip. A flashlight blinded him. Wally said,

"Keep quiet Baxter. It's me, and we have to boogey out of here right now!"

Wally pushed him toward his closet,

"Put on some jeans and a sweatshirt, our way out of here is going to be dirty."

As he fumbled with his clothes, Baxter asked him,

"What's happening? Is the house on fire?"

"Worse than a fire. A friend of mine who keeps me up to date about the local news came to see me five mi- nutes ago. He slipped around the Feds and got to my place. He couldn't call me, my phone is being tapped by the Feds. Anyway, he told me they have pulled a fast one. They have persuaded the Federal Attorney Gener- al's office to issue a warrant for your arrest on a RICO charge. They're headed here now to arrest you."

"But it's 3 AM," Baxter protested.

Wally didn't answer him, he pulled Baxter along to the backstairs. They ran into the woods at the rear of the house. At a spot near a corner of the property Wally headed for a big oak tree. He then turned to Baxter and briefed him about his plan of escape.

"There's an old drainage pipe running under your property and it continues for fifty yards or so past the west corner. I figured the Feds would snoop around and more than likely discover the entrance to the pipe. So about twenty yards inside the pipe, I filled it up with rocks and junk to make it appear to be blocked by a flood. I learned about tunnels in Nam."

"But if it's blocked, what good is it to us?"

Wally was down on his knees brushing aside leaves at the base of the tree. Then he lifted a cover hidden underneath.

"I dug a hole to connect with the drainage pipe past the area I blocked up. We have to crawl about fifteen feet in the tunnel I made to reach the pipe. You go first Baxter so I can push you from behind if you panic. Here's my flashlight. Don't put it on until you're in the tunnel."

Baxter was in shock. He dumbly went into the hole then lit the flashlight when he was out of sight. It was a narrow dirt tunnel with some areas partially filled in with dirt. He scooped the dirt aside and crawled to the drainage pipe. Inside the pipe, which was four feet in diameter, Wally took the point. He said to Baxter,

"From here on we have to move in darkness. Any little flicker of light could be seen outside the entrance. I'll go first since I know this tunnel."

He had turned off the flashlight. Baxter freaked out in the sudden inky blackness.
